PETITION CALLING FOR THE BAN ON THE COMMERCIALIZATION AND EXPLOITATION OF OUR GIRLS AT STRIP CLUBS IN LAGOS STATE

“STRIP CLUBS ARE ILLEGAL IN LAGOS STATE UNDER SECTION 134 (INDECENT ACTS) OF THE LAGOS STATE CRIMINAL LAW!
(SIMILAR ANTI-INDECENCY LAWS EXIST IN ALL THE STATES OF NIGERIA)
IS THERE A STRIP CLUB IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD? YOU CAN REPORT TO THE AUTHOURITIES

The commercialization of nudity and the exploitation of our girls at so called strip club in Lagos State are not only degrading acts that attempts to dehumanize the modern Nigerian female but they are also immoral acts that add ugliness to the beautiful African culture, morals and tradition.

Potential consequences of permitting these so called strip clubs to operate in Lagos state, include:

BREAK DOWN OF LAW AND ORDER

In a developing country like Nigeria, it is alleged that our security agencies are not as solid and robust as they should and this has culminated into the #ENDSARS protests. In a society where it is alleged that the police are not as robust as they should and in a country that is already filled with  more than enough violence, it is not advisable for acts that portray a lack of law and order to be permitted. Allowing our girls to strip and to be exploited at strip clubs is blatant portrayal of lack of law and order. If we permit the portrayal of lack of law and order in our society, then the criminal elements, hooligans, drug users, thugs, cults, and hoodlums in the society will now be encouraged to come out in the open to commit their heinous crimes on innocent victims since after all, the government itself that is supposed to protect the people has already permitted public nudity(portrayal of lack of law and order) at strip clubs.

CORRUPTION OF OUR YOUNG CHILDREN

Most of the strip clubs in Lagos state are in close proximity to schools where our children learn and this is a violation that is banned even in western countries like United States of America and the United Kingdom. But yet we Africans who are supposed to be the custodians of morals allow strip clubs to be opened close to primary and secondary schools where their children learn. The strip clubs, whilst marketing their immorality in the streets of Lagos, distribute provocative and sexually explicit flyers in areas where children go. These strip clubs go as far as attaching their provocative flyers to the windscreens of cars at shopping malls and restaurants where children go with their parents. Consequently it is not unusual for our little children to pick up these sexually explicit flyers after which they will proceed to ask their parents for the definition of “strip”, “lap dance” and “live sex show”. If we allow our children to be exposed to such immoralities then why are we parents? Is the aim of parenting not to protect our little ones from corruption.

FALL OF MARRIAGE

Just as it is in economics, where the demand for a product will fall as price increases, the demand for marriage will also fall as forms of immoralities like strip clubs and the rest increases. Marriage will fall and will soon be a thing of the past if we allow unnecessary immoralities like strip clubs. The family is the smallest unit of a society and if this smallest unit falls, the society will also fall. If we allow  unnecessary immoralities like strip clubs to bring down the culture of marriage, our developing but cultural society will be turned in a sadistic ghetto that is littered with  sex, drugs, crime, violence,  strippers, “baby mamas” and “baby daddies”.

INCREASE IN RAPE AND CHILD MOLESTATION

The rapists, pedophiles and child molesters in the society will now be freed from their  guilty conscience, emboldened, encouraged and empowered to come out in the open to commit their heinous crimes on our children and girls since after all, the society itself has permitted the exploitation of women at the strip clubs.

DEHUMANIZATION OF THE FEMALE

If we allow women to be displayed in glass cages at strip clubs as if they are animals at the zoo, then women will be turned into mere objects and toys of sexual entertainment and this in itself attempts to dehumanize the female.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

It has been discovered that the girls that are being exploited in these strip clubs are usually not natives of Lagos because they will not want their close family members or friends to identify them whilst they are stripping. And this explains why a considerable amount of the exploited girls in strip clubs are not even natives of Nigeria, a considerable amount of them are from ECOWAS countries like Cameroun, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory coast. This raises the question of whether or not these girls are being groomed and trafficked from their native countries into Lagos state. The risk of human trafficking is very high due to the dark and unforgiving nature of the strip club business.

DISTRACTION OF THE YOUTH

The youth are the leaders of tomorrow and they are  the ones that ought to seek the change and national development we want. But if the youths are busy chasing after immoralities like strip clubs and the rest, they will not be able to contribute positively to the society. Instead, they will be corrupted with lust for western culture, greed, lack of morals and with the thirst of becoming rich at all cost.

EROSION OF CULTURAL AFRICAN VALUES

The Nigerian culture and the African culture as a whole are conservative cultures where respect is given to the elders and where high moral standards are cherished. Ours is the tradition where the male child prostrates to greet his elders and where the female child kneels to greet her elders. But if we allow un-african immoralities like strip clubs, it will be a great hypocrisy and a portrayal of double standards. On one hand, you cannot tell our girls to kneel down to greet their elders and on the other hand allow these same girls to  strip naked in the public. You have to choose which one you want, do you want African culture or do you want European culture? You cannot have both. Similar to how African men and women as well as African resources were plundered by the Europeans through slavery and colonization, African values, tradition and morals will also be colonized and subsequently destroyed by European culture if we allow immoralities like strip clubs. If we allow the westerners to take our culture and tradition away, then what do we have left? We will be left with nothing.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Unlike regular night clubs where stripping does not take place, strip clubs provide avenues for the spreading of diseases because of the direct  skin to skin contact during so called lap dances and live sex shows. Such diseases include warts, athlete’s foot, Herpes Simplex Virus HSV diseases, ringworm, Human Papillomavirus HPV diseases and fungal infections. Considering the recent  pandemic as well as the various diseases that can be passed on at strip clubs, strip clubs pose a great risk to the health and safety of Lagosians.
